About this Item
76, 50pp. With seven woodcut illustrations in the text. Original publisher's green roan-backed buff boards, ruled and lettered in gilt. Lightly rubbed and marked. Contemporary inked gift inscription to FEP, contemporary book-label of Thos. Fras. Jepson to head of title, scattered foxing. A rare survival of a Regency edition of British philanthropist and abolitionist Thomas Day's (1748-1789) enduringly popular children's tale. First published in 1788 by John Stockdale, the story of the Little Jack the foundling, as with Day's better-known Sandford and Merton, embraces Rousseauian romantic notions of nature and childhood. This edition, the only one issued by publisher's S. & A. Davis as a part of their 'Juvenile Library' (priced at an unusually steep eighteen pence), contains several, rather crude, woodcut illustrations that have been attributed to engraver and draughtsman John Bewick (1760-1795), brother of the esteemed Thomas. OCLC records copies at three locations (California, Florida, and Yale)' COPAC adds no further. Size: 12mo. Seller Inventory # AQ24294
