Rubbed, marked, and creased. Very occasional chipping to margins. Early ownership inscriptions of Dorothy and Eliza Baker to upper and lower wrappers, frontispiece, title page, and pages 23 and 30. An apparently unrecorded one penny chapbook retelling of the perennially popular folk tale of Dick Whittington and his cat. The publisher, a former ribbon warehouseman and sometime deacon of West Orchard Congregational church, Nathaniel Merridew, is primarily remembered for founding The Coventry Herald in 1808, a periodical intended to represent the Whig and dissenting interest in the town. The paper would ultimately evolve to become the recognised organ of the Liberals in Coventry. It continued to be run by the Merridew family until 1842 and in 1830 absorbed the more radical Coventry Observer to become the Coventry Herald & Observer. Size: 16mo. Seller Inventory # AQ28857
