B0012J91LC 1966 limited edition (400 copies), Book Club of California (San Francisco, California), prepared in the de luxe French style of unsewn sheets in heavy handmade paper text folders in an 11 1/4 x 16 inches tall purple cloth clamshell case with orange printed labels to front and spine, with an original leaf from the 1517 Complutensian Polyglot Bible tipped in, pp. A fine copy in a near fine clamshell box with only slight rubbing and edgewear. Prospectus and printed slip of instructions on usage laid in. Printed on a hand-press by Lewis and Dorothy Allen at the Allen Press, Kentfield, California, on dampened all-rag paper with two or three colors on every page and with many reproductions of relevant sixteenth century woodcuts. The general design of the work, including type-faces, decorations and color, is intended to convey the feeling of early sixteenth century Spanish books. The leaf in this volume is from the Old Testament, printed in three parallel columns of text: Hebrew on the outside, the Latin Vulgate in the middle (corrected by Antonio de Nebrija), and the Greek Septuagint on the inside - in particular, the tail end of chapter 62 and most of chapter 63 of Isaiah (which begins, 'Who is this that comes from Edom, in crimsoned garments, from Bozrah?') References: Entry no. 27 in Hamel, Disbound and Dispersed (Caxton 2005), at pp. 86-88; 30 Allen Press Bibliography (Book Club of California 1985). Note that this is a heavy and oversized book, so additional postage will be required for international or priority orders. ~LR1~ The Complutensian Polyglot Bible is the first printed polyglot of the entire Bible, initiated and financed by Cardinal Francisco Jimenez de Cisneros (1436 - 1517) and published by Complutense University of Madrid. It includes the first printed editions of the Greek New Testament, the complete Septuagint, and the Targum Onkelos. The Complutensian Polyglot is quite rare; of the 600 printed six-volume sets, only 123 are known to have survived to date. Bookseller Inventory # LR1-0951-4132
