About this Item
twenty-one billionth paradox, Leonard Daventry, Doubleday 1971. Hardcover, state first edition in very good + condition in a very good dust jacket. Bumping corners of boards, light dusting to top of text block, some minor discoloration along spine area on end papers. Dust jacket has toning to edges and small tears to top and bottom of spine cover and creasing at fold overs, slight smudging on back cover. Otherwise this copy is in tight, clean condition. Protective dust jacket cover included. From the jacket: An incredible odyssey to the brink of the universe ultimately lead a strangely desperate group of people to a significant redefinition of "Survival". Abalt Barca was a telepath. Stranker was a convicted murderer. Neil Markan, Desmon Pess and Maen Dtrin were revolutionary students. They shared one common desire. They believed in life. Captian Stevon was a space commander whose existence was ruled by one fatal error of judgment. Rose Zani was a sycophantic journalist. Professor El STongo was a man whose obsession with science obliterated all else. Gret Kober was a noted astronomer with a questionable private life. These four were cowards, thought life was cheap, but death was cheaper. All nine of them had been assigned to travel millions of light years to the edge of the universe and back. Fantastic technology enabled the Venturi XV to complete the trip in one month with every moment of the voyage recorded in complex memory banks, This would include of course, the certain deaths of the human cargo. From the onset it was apparent that no horrific interstellar unknown would kill them. Fed by their own self-hatred and distrust of each other, they would with cunning and terrible viciousness annihilate each other. Without warning they underwent a torturing physical and mental experience. In the aftermath they came to realize the two options available to them. Did they prefer to struggle for life, not matter how vainly, and hope to return to their imperfect lives on Earth, or did they really wish to face the worst of alll unknowns-death.
