About this Item

Description:

1st Edition, large 8vo (21cm), xvi, 527pp, publisher's green cloth, all edges green. The binding is tight and secure. Slight bumping to corners. Plain endpapers intact. No previous ownership marks. A few spots to title page, but cream paper very clean throughout. An excellent, crisp copy of this Gaelic anthology that is often (due in no small part to its importance) found very worn. In a substantial preface to this unsurpassed wealth of Scottish Gaelic songs - roughly 300 compositions of every description - Gilleasbuig Mac na Ceàrdadh (Archibald Sinclair, the compiler and publisher) expresses his good wishes for the book in his native tongue: ".Tha mi ag guidhe gum bi an t-Òranaiche cosmhuil ri sgoth-long eutrom, thapaidh, loma làn do ràgha is tagha bathair - iùbhrach ghasda, chòmhnard a sheòlas troimh gach caol is camus - a shiùbhlas air gach loch is linne - a thathaicheas air gach ùig is òb - a thadhaileas aig gach port is lamraig, gus, coimh-ionnan ri iadhadh na grèine, an cuir i cuairt shunndach, shoirbheachail, air an t-saoghal Ghàidhealach gu lèir." ~ ".I hope that the Songster will be like a light, sturdy yacht - laden with the choicest cargo - a noble, even-keeled cutter that will sail every strait and bay - that will travel every loch and firth - that will frequent every creek and inlet - that will visit every port and jetty until, like the circling of the sun, she completes a happy, successful tour of the entire Gaelic-speaking world." There is a dedication to Iain F. Caimbeul, Islay (Iain Òg Ìle). Seller Inventory # 1584
