Pitman outlines various proposals for constructing a canal through Central America to avoid having to sail round Cape Horn. The map shows various possible routes for the canal including the Isthmus of Panama. With an interesting provenance. The diplomat George Bosanquet (1791-1866) was the eldest son of Jacob Bosanquet (1755-1828) who served as Chairman of the East India Company on three occasions in 1798, 1803 and 1811.
