From the introductory note: "This sale, on behalf of our fellow booksellers who have suffered and seen their stocks reduced to ashes, is unique în the annals of booksellers and bookselling. When' this war is over and won, another chapter could be added to Mumby's 'Romance of Bookselling', with stories of the bravery and fortitude of booksellers, who, after everything has gone, have started again and carried on with that quiet confidence which is characteristic of so many.
