Small quarto (9 x 6"). xxv, [3], 436pp. Contemporary full tree calf, with gold lettering, tooling and ruling on spine. Frontispiece portrait of Arthur Murphy engraved by Edward Scriven, from a bust by sculptor Peter Turnerelli. First Murphy edition of "The Works of Sallust," containing Sallust's following surviving works: "Catiline's Conspiracy," "The Orations of Cicero Against Catiline," and "The War Against Jugurtha." These works look at the Catiline conspiracy, an attempt to overthrow the Roman Republic, and the Jugurthine War, which took place is 112 - 106 BC, both being significant moments in Roman history. Roman historian and politician, Sallust is the earliest known Roman historian with surviving works. Translated into English by Arthur Murphy, who also translated some works of Tactius. Murphy was the pseudonym used by the Irish writer Charles Ranger. Binding rubbed along joints, with some minor abrasion to leather. Contemporary previous owner's armorial bookplate on inside of front cover (Joseph Tasker), and his name and inscription dated 1816 in ink at upper margin of front free endpaper. Very minor and sporadic foxing throughout. Binding in overall good to good+, interior in very good condition. Seller Inventory # 45287
