1846. First edition. 173pp., a folding frontispiece key to an illustration of Burns's inauguration as poet-laureate of the Lodge Canongate Kilwinning, and 2 pages at the end of the book advertising engravings of the original painting of the inauguartion. Robert Burns is well known for his poetry but he was also a noted Freemason. He was initiated on 4th July 1781, in St David's Lodge, No, 174, Tarbolton, and was passed and raised in the same Lodge on 1st October 1781. When he arrived at Edinburgh he was made a member of Canongate Kilwinning Lodge No 2 Edinburgh. This book contains some account of his life as a mason together with brief account of the various characters prepresented in the picutre of the inauguration. These include Alexander Ferguson, Lord Torphichen, Henry Erskine, William Dunbar, and Peter Williamson. The book is bound in the original dark green cloth covered boards with a paper title label on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling on the boards. There is a little wear to the cloth on the corner tips and the spine ends are bumped. The title label is worn and there is a small white stain on the spine just below the label. The contents are tight and clean with some foxing on the endpapers and scattered foxing elsewhere within the book. This is mostly light although a few pages are a bit more heavily affected. The frontispiece is also foxed and a name and date (1886) has been written in pencil on the front free endpaper. Seller Inventory # gScotPoetBurns2
