1st Limited edn (1247/1500). Hardback, no d/w. 240pp text + 10 titled, full page, tisuue-guarded colour plates within text (including frontispiece). and 49 titled tissue-guarded b/w plates to rear. Brown bevelled cloth boards with gilt motif to front and gilt titles to spine. Very minor rubs to extrems. The front pastedown contains the signature of Aubrey Toppin F.S.A. National Museum of Ireland. Also details of edition number and limitation and of review and letter pasted to rear pastedown. Also 1946 cutting from Quaritch catalogue valueing book at £17.15 shillings. Toppin's review in 'The Irish Times' is pasted to rear pastedown and a letter from R.L Hobson (the author) to Toppin thanking him for the review is pasted to rear free endpaper. Clipping from 'The Londoner's Diary' 29th Oct 1936 announcing the retirement of Hobson from the B M. pasted to verso of rear free endpaper. Also laid-in: A4 portrait (after a drawing by Francis Dodd) of R.L.Hobson, tipped onto card. 4pp list of subscribers to the presentation of the portrait to Hobson. 7pp Memorial Service booklet at The Queen's Chapel of the Savoy for Captain Aubrey John Toppin C.V.O.,F.S.A. Maltravers Herald Extraordinary. Late Norroy and Ulster King Of Arms. Also b/w photo 'Early Kang-Shi Famille jaune' with Toppin's comments on reverse. Also double page colour extract from ILN supplement for May 1913 of Chinese Porcelain. The text block is neatly (and interestingly) annotated in pencil by Toppin (We assume this was the copy he used for his reviews), but otherwise this is an extremely clean, bright and tight copy.
