Contemporary printed boards, rebacked, black morocco lettering-label, new endpapers. Backstrip slightly torn at head, boards a little marked, corners a little worn. With the ownership inscription of Elizabeth Hopper, 1825; later (Leo Wyatt) book-label of Iain Bain. Tipped in at the front the publishers' slip advertising "A Correct PLAN of EDINBURGH [&c]"; 2pp. of publisher's advertisements at end, dated August 1825. Not the author's first book - that was the anonymous Illustrations of the Author of Waverley (1822) - but published when he was only 23. He made his name with Traditions of Edinburgh (1824-5). "The irregularity of the ground whereon Edinburgh is situated, gives the whole city a picturesque character, which many travellers have declared to be equalled - nay, resembled - in no other European city . . . The very contrast of the grim old castellated city, with its juvenile companion, has an effect the most singular, perhaps, and admirable, which could be produced by any arrangement of real or imaginary scenery.".
