Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First Edition (first printing). 8vo. xiv, 446pp. Black cloth lettered and ruled in gold at the spine, and with a gilt-stamped decoration to the upper board. With a frontispiece, a two-colour title page decoration, endpaper decorations, five plates, and various tailpiece decorations by Keith Henderson. The front hinge just a fraction tender. Free endpapers lightly toned. Handsome former owner bookplate to the front pastedown. A good bright copy. No dust wrapper. Le Guin, and Clive Barker; and deemed by science fiction scholar E.F.Bleiler "still the finest heroic fantasy". Seller Inventory # ARC94201

First edition of the author's high fantasy novel, read fervently by C. S. Lewis, who wrote the author a fan letter before finishing, inviting him to meet with the Inklings. J. R. R. Tolkien later praised Eddison as "the greatest and most convincing writer of 'invented worlds' that I have read". Written in 17th-century English, the novel describes a protracted war in an imagined medieval realm, incorporating influences from Norse sagas and Renaissance poems, quoting Shakespeare's celebrated "Sonnet 18" in its entirety. The work is a precursor to Eddison's Zimiamvian Trilogy, sometimes grouped together as the Zimiamvian series. J. R. R. Tolkien, "Letter 199", The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, 1981. Octavo. Frontispiece, illustrations in-text, by Keith Henderson. Title page vignette in red and black. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, central vignette on front cover in gilt, publisher's device on rear cover in blind, black vignette on endpapers, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Nick to spine ends, minor rubbing to cloth, splash marks to top edge, occasional foxing to contents. A very good copy. Seller Inventory # 192499

First edition, inscribed by the author in the month of publication on the front pastedown, "Frank Dicksee, from E.R.E., 12th May 1922". Sir Frank Dicksee (1853-1928) was a painter who also explored heroic and historical romance in his own art, being influenced by the pre-Raphaelites and opposing the trend towards modern art that emerged near the end of his career. Written in 17th-century English, Eddison's debut novel describes a protracted war in an imagined medieval realm, incorporating influences from Norse sagas and Renaissance poems, quoting Shakespeare's celebrated "Sonnet 18" in its entirety. The work is a precursor to Eddison's Zimiamvian Trilogy, sometimes grouped together as the Zimiamvian series. The Worm Ouroboros was eagerly read by C. S. Lewis, who before finishing the book wrote a letter to Eddison inviting him to meet with the Inklings. J. R. R. Tolkien later praised Eddison as "the greatest and most convincing writer of 'invented worlds' that I have read" (Letters 199). The work continues to be regarded as among the finest works of heroic fantasy ever written. Barron 5-99; Bleiler 597; Currey, p. 174; Locke I, p. 79; Survey of Modern Fantasy Literature V, pp. 2180-4. Octavo. Frontispiece and chapter tail-pieces by Keith Henderson. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, central vignette to front cover in gilt, illustrated endpapers, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. With supplied dust jacket. Cloth slightly rubbed, inner hinges split but sound, occasional spots but clean overall; jacket unclipped, spine mildly toned, couple of nicks and light marks, presenting well: a very good copy in near-fine jacket.
