About this Item
First Edition. Fine hardcover in Fine dustwrapper (as new). Inscribed by Michael Bullock (to fellow fantasist Jessica Amanda Salmonson) and dated 1997. Fantasy and surrealist short stories or prose-poems, set more or less in "The Torture Garden" of Octave Mirbeau. Afterword by Richard Olafson, "Eye of the Bird, on The Walled Garden by Michael Bullock" in which he compares to the work to that of Lautremont or Monk Lewis, the walls of the garden being barriers to consciousness. A remarkable intellectual work of the fantastique. Bullock was just about the last leading surrealist poetry and prose stylist, well known as a translator as well. Born in England in 1918, he lived for many years in Canada. In 1936 he visited the landmark Surrealist Exhibition at the National Gallery and devoted the rest of his life to the surrealist forms, though often verging into more traditional weird tales. He was translated into many, many languages (including Sanskrit and Chinese). Seller Inventory # 3709
