A very smart two-volume set of the first edition of this survey of the Islands now known as the Shetlands. Original, polished full tan calf with stamped decorations to borders; inlaid bands to spines.Gilt lines to edges of boards, gilt lettering to spines. Marbling to page edges.Red ribbons. Brown endpapers, library label of Thomas Munro bearing the family clan's coat of arms with the motto "Dread God" to each pastedown.Thomas Munro (1761-1827) was a Scotsman of some prominence, being 1st Baronet of Linderits, a Governor of Madras, and serving as an Army officer and statesman for the East India Company. Vol 1 : half-title, map frontis, preface ix, 364pp. Vol 2 : half-title, contents vi, 341-344 misbound from rear, vii, 345pp. Minuscule rubbing to bottom corners. Titlepage of vol. 1 has oxidisation from engraved frontis map, else all very clean pages. A lovely, tightly bound set and it's hard to imagine a much better copy of a 210 year-old library set.
