About this Item

A scarce Americana and Judaica, the life of a Portuguese converso who became a merchant in Lima. The life of Antonio de San Pedro (1570-1622), a Portuguese New Christian, a converso who was sent to Lima by his parents, in fear of the inquisition. In Lima, he became a merchant, and in 1604 he was arrested for practicing Jewish rites. First, he was imposed three years of public penance in the Convent of La Merced in Lima, where he truly converted to Christianity. After that, he was expelled to Spain, where he entered the Osuna convent of the discalced Mercedarians and then on lived a very pious Christian life until his death. The members of his convent began collecting evidence and testimonies of miracles he did and the process of beatification was opened shortly. As part of the campaign his Life was written by Juan de San Dámaso, and eventually published in 1670 as the first book on Antonio de San Pedro. Unlike most copies, this one contains the engraved portrait of Fray Antonio de San Pedro, showing the friar kneeling in front of Christ. The original painting was created by Bernardino Baldung and was turned into an engraving by Peeter Clouwet. Scarce on the market, RBH list only 2 copies within the last 85 years. The book is quite well represented in institutions in Spain (5), Portugal (4) and Chile (3), but besides those IB only lists a copy in Italy and no copies in the US. Sabin 76022.
