About this Item
London, two small octavo volumes [264 p. and 260 p. respectively]. ***CONTENT: Robert Gordon Latham (1812-1888) was an influential (though controversial) British ethnologist and philologist, and author of many works. The two volumes offered here are his important studies of the ethnology of Britain and the British colonies. The volumes describe numerous peoples and cultures, with emphasis on history, distribution, physical and social characteristics, languages, religions, manners and customs, etc. The "colonies" volume describes inhabitants of the Mediterranean region, Africa, many parts of Asia (India, Malaya, Hong Kong, etc.), native Australians and New Zealanders, and more. A concluding chapter describes native peoples of the Americas: Eskimos, Algonkins, Iroquois, Sioux, Assineboins, Haida, Caribs, South American "Indians", and many more. *** The volume on the "Britons" covers many historical aspects of habitation of the British Isles: stone-age and bronze-age residents, Celts, Gaels, Irish, Picts, Gauls, Romans, Angles, Saxons, Danes and other Scandinavians, Normans, etc. ***CONDITION: The two volumes are complete and near Fine, bound in identical 20th c. half calf and marbled paper bindings. The covers on both books are very clean and well preserved, with scant evidence of use; the gilt lettered and decorated backstrips, with five raised bands, are pristine. Joints and hinges solid, bindings very firm. The text pages are typically fresh, clean and bright, with no foxing. Slight edge browning to the fore-edge of the first volume, but it does not affect the interior. Stamps of the Royal College of Surgeons, of which the author was a licentiate, on the title pages. A most handsome pair of important works. International shipping will be extra for these volumes, but only at my cost. Seller Inventory # OG5354
