First edition. An account of the turbulent period in Armenia in the late 19th century. In response to Armenian nationalist stirrings, the Turks massacred thousands of Armenians in 1894 and 1896. As Azhderian notes in the preface: "The late Armenian tragedies have claimed a large share of the world's attention ? Yet with all the information of the present situation of affairs in the Turkish Empire, there is still a manifest lack of knowledge of the land, its historical associations, the relations which its people sustain one to the other, and their character and home life ? The mission of this book, therefore, is not simply to set forth the causes and the development of the late tragedies in Armenia; but, from the standpoint of a native, one who is born and reared in the country, to portray, as accurately as possible, the various phases of the social, religious, and political customs and institutions of the Armenians and the Turks; and to give some account of their history, past and present?"
