Boston: Roberts Bros. 1887. Printed by University Press, John Wilson and Son, Cambridge. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Decorative Cloth, excellent artwork on cover and spine. Slightest of wear at corners but no bumping. Spine gutters, and signatures all intact and still function freely. Clean paste downs with beautiful decorative pattern, looks like period wallpaper. Text block is solid and unmarked, pages show slight tanning consistent with age. Very Good. First Edition. Childrens, 296 pgs, no advertisements. Bears inscription: George Oliver Curtis From Grandpa and Grandma, Christmas 1887. The author, Laura E. Richards, was the daughter of Julia Ward Howe who had written the lyrics for The Battle Hymm of the Republic. The book is dedicated to the blind children of the Perkins Institution, the Massachusetts School for the Blind founded by her father, Dr. Samuel Gridley Howe, a well known abolitionist. In 1876 Richards moved to Gardiner, Maine where her husband managed a paper mill. An elementary school in Gardiner still bears her name. In addition to this work she was a prolific writer; among other works she write, with two of her sisters, a biography of her mother Julia Ward Howe. It won the Pulitzer Prize in 1917.
