First English edition; 8vo (23 x 16); 61 photographic illustrations on 45 plates, blind stamp ('presentation copy') to title, newspaper clippings tipped to endpapers, pencil inscriptions and annotations; publisher's gilt pictorial cloth, top edge gilt, lower inner hinge weak, a near-fine copy; xii, 356pp. A bright copy of this personal account of an expedition undertaken by J. C. Ewald Falls (1885-) with his cousin, Kaufmann. The initial aim was to journey to Cyrenaïca, but due to many obstacles it was not possible, so the members of the team turned their attention towards rediscovering the tomb of St Menas in the Libyan desert. The copy of Dr. Neville H. Chittick (1924-1984) with his manuscript inscriptions, notations, and newspaper clippings in the text. Chittick was an archaeologist who specialised in historic cultures of Northeast Africa, who conducted his own expeditions to the Horn of Africa and wrote extensively on its ancient civilisations.
