Dark violet boards faded along spine and edges, elaborately blind stamped, titled in gilt, frontis with later, partial coloring else clean. A collection of tales in verse which fit with Thwaite's characterization of her work as "express sympathy for the poor.delight in nature and simple pleasures." Illustrated with small, charming engravings throughout. Originally published in England by Darton in 1836. Mary Howitt, a Quaker, was best known as the first to translate the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen to English and for her verses "The Spider and the Fly,"The Fairies of Caldon Lowe," and "The Sale of the Pet Lamb."
