(London: Frederick Warne & Co., 1903). First UK Edition, first or second issue which are believed to be identical. Publisher's original dark grey boards. End-papers Plate 1 (Quinby page 7). Boards and spine in fine condition. Mounted pictorial label to the front board showing squirrel dancing, frontispiece and 26 illustrations in colour; black and white illustration on the title page of a squirrel eating a nut in single black line circle. Printed by Edmund Evans , Engraver and Printer, The Racquet Court Press, Swan Street, London, S.E. 85 pages. Title page dated 1903 and without the statement "Author of the Tale of Peter Rabbit". No inscriptions. No restoration. Binding sound, a crease to page 38 but overall clean and complete. This is one of the nicest copies of this title that I have handled. A superb example, presenting perfectly upon the shelf. The first Beatrix Potter book to feature pictorial end-papers. Quinby 5A page 7. Now housed in a custom-made acetate cover.
