About this Item
Covers slightly darkened, and with mild wear at head of spine, upper cover slightly nicked. Printed at the Chiswick Press. "I wrote [this] many years ago . . . and my intention was to illustrate it profusely and publish it. Then it was put by for a long while until one day in a Soho restaurant I ventured to show it to John Masefield, who to my joy told me that it was very good!! and to publish it, and if I did he would review it!" Munnings's notice in the ODNB reports that, at the Garrick Club, the future President of the Royal Academy "revelled in reciting his sixty-verse 'Ballad of Anthony Bell' and John Masefield's 'Reynard the Fox' which the poet had asked him to illustrate". The ballad opens: "The frost is keen, and sparrows unseen / Are fighting amongst the holly; / The hunting is stopped, and the wintry sun / Has tried to thaw where the currents run / In the brook by Steepleton Folly . . .".
