Those already familiar with Mann's books will find here many new and penetrating conclusions that will increase the range of their appreciation ***In discussing such masterpieces as The Magic Mountain, Doctor Faustus, Joseph and His Brethren, Death in Venice and Tonio Kroger, Mr. Hatfield stresses Mann's preoccupation with death, evil, social decadence, myth, and bourgeois society. He also traces the influence of Wagner, Nietzsche, Schiller, Goethe, Schopenhauer and Freud on Mann's work, and shows how these varied influences enabled him to become the mediator between tradition and experiment. This book also contains the first discussion of The Holy Sinner, the new novel that will be published in 1952. ***The author of this book, who did post-graduate work at Oxford and Berlin University, has for the past five years taught German Literature at Columbia University in the U.S.A.
