About this Item
Slavery & the Negro; 2 articles on these subjects from ?The Encyclopaedia Britannica? 1822/3 6th edition. Condition: the pages are loose and the stab holes from the original binding show, a closed tear without loss and some aging to paper but the articles complete. Good to very good. The slavery section is 16 pages long "double column" on to 18 pages as part 2 runs on. This 2nd section on the Negro explains their origins, places of existence and traits ?Homo Pelli Nigra?. It also has the topography of Negroland or Nigritia. It speaks of the objections based on their own predilections to enslave one another for the most ?whimsical of crimes?. (Quote) ?Slavery is, indeed, in every form an evil but it seems to be one of those many evils which having LONG prevailed in the world, can be advantageously removed only by degrees.? (end of quote). The longer detailed section on slavery is important as it was written just before the manumission and slave abolition so hard fought for (and expresses the exact sentiments of the day from a higher motive than base reactions of a mob or prejudicial slant), for half a century It details somewhat the British laws which improved the debates and laws and actions of slavery and slave trading in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It also mentions despots in Africa killing thousands of their fellow men for tyranny and avarice. ****An important 1st PRINTING article on the Slave trade compiled by some of the best authorities of the time.
