About this Item
1950. First edition, published for The Saltire Society by The Banffshire Journal. [xi], 166pp., a frontispiece, 8 black and white plates, 15 illustrations within the text and 8 maps. Peter Frederick (Charles) Anson (1889-1975) was an English writer on religious matters and on architectural and maritime subjects. He also spent a period as an Anglican Benedictine monk. For many years he made his home beside the harbour of a busy fishing port on the Moray Firth, and came to know the fishing folk of Scotland intimately. In this book he deals with their history, scial background, religion adn superstitions, and describes the various Fishing Districts, methods of fishing and the types of vessels - ancient an modern. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with silver titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with bumping to the spine ends and fading around part of the bottom front spine corner and top edge of the book near the top spine corner. The contents are tight and clean with brown offsetting to the free endpapers. There is no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper has some shelf wear with light soiling and bumping and nicks to the corner tips and spine ends. About 1/4" is missing from the bottom of the spine. There are a few small tears on the edges and a larger tear of about 1" on the bottom front spine edge. This tear and a few of the others have been repaired on the reverse with tape.
