About this Item
Stated First edition with I-M code on copyright page, and price of $5.95 on unclipped dust jacket. This is a notoriously difficult book to determine the true 1st printing of, since the bmoc version also has the same manufacturing code. The price on the jacket ensures that this is not a bmoc version, but a true first. The jacket has tears and chips and a 2"x1" piece is missing near the top of the spine. Jacket also has some legacy tape pieces on the front and rear flaps - all now contained in a protective cover. The book itself is a gorgeous copy with only light shelf bumping and no marks whatever. Clean pages in a tight spine with vibrant gilt titles. The 1963 Harper Prize novel was of course adapted for the screen in 1966 with one of the coolest actors ever, Steve McQueen, in the lead as Holman, the ship's engineer whose problems with authority and moral center land him in hot water time and again. An evocative sprawling epic set during America's ill-defined intervention in China. Seller Inventory # 000007
