Original green pebbled cloth with gilt titled spine. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Very minor rubbing to lower edge and spine end; otherwise clean and bright. Interior is clean and tight. Remarkable condition for its age; now with clear mylar wrapper. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The author, as a war correspondent for a Philadelphia newspaper, here provides a historical narrative of the early summer of 1862. The book covers the events leading up to the Seven Days Battles, including the Union Army's attempt to capture Richmond. It provides a detailed account of the strategic maneuvers and battles that took place during this time. Scarce, wartime publication of great. interest. REFERENCES: DORN III 1538; NEVINS I pg 73: "Cook, a prolific writer, was a reporter for the Philadelphia Press during McClellan's spring, 1862 campaign; his account is excellent as a commentary on the country and its inhabitants." COULTER 91: "As Special Correspondent of The Philadelphia Press, Joel Cook accompanied McClellan on his Peninsula expedition in 1862. With unusual ability and keenness of observation, he describes the landscape, the rivers, the old mansions, the log cabins, the historic towns, and both white and black people. This work is highly valuable as a travel account in this restricted part of Virginia. Subsequently Cook wrote many books of travel.".
