These 14 short stories were written in France between the Vendée and Charente-Maritime during the Second World War (1939-1945). Only the short story Les Demoiselles Queue-de-Vache has not been pre-published in the press. This collection contains the short story entitled Le Matin des trois absoutes, which is the first version of the short story Le Témoignage de l'enfant de ch ur, published in the collection Maigret et l'Inspecteur malgracieux.
