VERY RARE gilded & embossed illustrated hardcover book, sorry no dust-jacket. "Royal Youths - A Book of Princehoods" by Ascott R. Hope. This book is believed to be the Fisrt Edition, published by T. Fisher Unwin, London, 1892. Thick & heavy book. Slightly large 12mo, 20.4 cm x 13.8 cm x 4.6 cm, Red decorated cloth-covered bevelled boards, Gilt, black and colour embossed lettering & decoration on spine and front cover, Clear embossed publisher's logo on back cover. 355 pages. Weight: 940 Grams. CONTENTS ARE MOSTLY IN GOOD, CLEAN CONDITION!!! However, there are several cracks forming in between pages throughout the book, including between 1st end paper & end paper at front & back of book. Some signs of repair by previous owner: glue and sticky tape residue on end papers, and between several other pages. Frontispiece is missing. Spine is discoloured, worn and marked, bumped & frayed either end with some loss of cloth there, split & damage to cloth alongside front cover at head & tail, ridge down middle, cloth is bubbled from damp, colour decoration & embossed lettering a little worn away, gilt a little dull. Cover is very marked, stained & discoloured (more so on back), gilt & colour embossed decoration visible & detailed but worn away & scuffed in parts, gilt very dull, edges worn, scuffed & bumped, some tears in cloth there. Corners are bumped and frayed, boards exposed & worn away there. Last free end paper is missing. End papers are creased, damaged, marked & faded in front & back of book. Presentation prize sticker on 1st end paper. Pages 3 to 14 are almost loose. Some pages (very few) have small corner folds, and/or tiny edge bumps/tears, and/or smudges, and or damp stains & darker foxing marks mostly in margins. Page 83/84 has 3 small edge tears & folds/creasing in same area. Large damp stain running through last few pages. Pages 327 to 330 have frayed & soiled edges. Very light age tanning & occasional foxing throughout. FRAGILE BUT VERY RARE SOUGHT AFTER ITEM!!!
