A sweeping historical romance set in sixteenth-century France, where a Protestant Englishman is exiled during the pro-Catholic reign of Queen Mary I. While in France, he spends time at the court of Catherine de Medici and Princess Mary of Scotland, finally coming to stay at the Vallee de la Roche-Blanche.It is a noted example of emerging Romantic literature written by female authors.Complete in three volumes.The first edition of this work, scarce to find in any edition.Written by Georgian poet and writer Anna Maria Porter.Lacking the half titles.Containing the bookplate of Ellen Hone Senior to the front pastedown of each volume. Uniformly bound in half calf with marbled boards. Externally, smart, with some light shelf wear to the boards, and rubbing to the heads and tails of the spines and extremities. Leather is lifting slightly to the head of the spine to Volume I. Containing a previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown of each volume. A small ink notation to the tail of page 95 in Volume II. Internally, pages 51 to 70 are lifting slightly at the tail. Remaining binding is firm.
