The engraved title page depicts, a king centered between fleur de lys decorated drapes and two female figures, one of whom is holding a cross and the other a sword and scales. A coat of arms is centered above the publisher's imprint. Johannes de Laet (1581-1649) was a theologian, historian, geographer and businessman. He is believed to have been the overall editor of the 'Respublica' series, issued by the Elsevier publishing house at Leiden, of which this is the volume relating to France. Some dusting to title page and a slight discolouration mark to the upper margin of the first ten leaves, otherwise a very good copy of the first edition without any damage, library stamps, inscriptions or other markings.
