Octavo, vertical-ribbed dark brown cloth stamped in blind; a superior copy of a seminal western Americana publication, rebacked, with gilt spine lettering faded, ownership signature, and scattered foxing. First edition, House version, with twenty-two lithographed plates and five lithographed maps (three hand-colored and folding), including a stunning, hand-colored, folding map by Charles Preuss (measuring 30 1/2 x 51 1/4 inches, neatline, on two joined sheets, 32 1/2 x 55 inches), archivally reinforced on verso. Howes F-370; Sabin 25845; Wheat, 2: #497. The "magnificent" Preuss map, which Wheat deemed a "memorable document in the cartographic history of the West," is enclosed in a separate cloth chemise, which is housed with Frémont's "Report" in a slipcase and additionally preserved in a custom made folding box.
