About this Item
Regency celebrity culture caricature. A party of pleasure - dedicated to the Funny Club An overloaded pleasure boat on the Thames in summer is capsizing, a dandy already in the water may have caused the upset when his spur caught the sail rope. A woman falls into the water head first, with a black servant falling on top of her, holding a breast in one hand and her neck in the other, that woman kicking a man in the mouth. The picnic pie, bottles and plates slide into the water, while an idiot spaniel sits on the stern begging for salvation. To the left of the main scene an exhausted oarsman rows a fat newspaper reader in a boat very low in the water. On the bank are two large villas, as at Twickenham, Richmond or Kew. Originally published 1822. Fair condition, complete, but with some foxing and a tear at the bottom. Uncoloured. Platemark: 25x37 cms. Etching from George and Robert Cruikshank (1792-1878) s Cruikshankiana, An Assemblage Of The Most Celebrated Works Of George Cruikshank London: M Lean, [1835]. (1835) London: M Lean, [1835]., 1835. One of 83 etched plates by George & Robert Cruikshank. The best of the Cruikshank family of caricaturists, and perhaps as good as Rowlandson, and Gillray. "Prolific and dexterous beyond his competitors, for a generation he delineated Tories, Whigs and Radicals with fine impartiality. Satirical capital came to him from every public event… the best judges have placed his productions in the foremost rank; in this respect his works have been compared favourably with the masterpieces of etching."
