1839. First edition. [ii], vii, 608pp. plus 76pp. (premiums offered in 1838), 78pp. (premiums in 1839). 11 black and white plates (1 coloured), a coloured map of Lanarkshire, coloured geological map of Renfrewshire and part of Ayrshire, and black and white illustrations within the text. The Society was established in Edinburgh in 1784 as "The Highland Society of Edinburgh", a society for the improvement of the Highlands, and in 1787 it received its first Royal Charter as "The Highland Society of Scotland at Edinburgh". The original objects of the Society included the improvement of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland and the conditions of their inhabitants, an enquiry into the means of their improvement by establishing towns and villages - facilitating communications by roads and bridges - advancing agriculture - extending fisheries - introducing useful trades and manufactures , and the preservation of the language, poetry and music of the Highlands. Its title changed in 1834 to "The Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland", upon conferral of its second Royal Charter. The final change of name came in 1948 when the Society was honoured with the title "Royal" on the occasion of His Majesty King George VI's visit to the Society's Show in Inverness with members of his family. This volume of essays and transactions of the Society includes essays on an improved method of making meadow-hay; tile-draining; the cultivation of chicory and flax in belgium; and rabies in sheep. The book is bound in contemporary half leather over paper covered boards with gold titling and five thin raised bands on the spine. The book is only in good condition as both boards and the spine are detached from the text block. There boards have shelf wear and some soiling and the leather on the corners is worn with a small bit of damage and loss on the corner tips. The leather on the separated spine is scuffed with wear to the titling and a little damage to the title label. The contents are tight and clean with a separation developing down the spine edge between some of the signatures. There is a small stamp from the Royal Society of Edinburgh on the front free endpaper and title-page. Overall, this is a clean volume that is suitable for a professional rebacking and recasing to repair the detached spine and boards.
