About this Item
Very Good+ in a Near Fine dustjacket. Bound in full black cloth. The spine is stamped in gilt. Octavo. 315pps., with 22 maps. There is a faint bit of dustspotting to the top edge and bumping to the spine-ends. Also, a previous owner's name is neatly penned on the ffep. Otherwise overall clean, bright, and soundly bound. The dustjacket, glossy in a mylar sleeve, has modest rubbing wear at the extremities and a small crease in the rear flap; the original price is intact. A nice copy of this classic of military history. ".S. L. A. Marshall went to Korea as Infantry Operations Analyst with the Eighth Army. A first brilliant report, 'The River and the Gauntlet,' dealt with dealt with the defeat of the Eighth Army by the Chinese Communists in 1950. Now General Marshall pinpoints the 1953 action on Pork Chop Hill in a stunning account of men in action. The battle began April 16, 1953, and lasted 48 hours. It was an impressive artillery duel, but Marshall's chief interest and emphasis are always on the men themselves. He interviewed the patrols before they went into the lines; he talked with the survivors when they came out. And he reports action from the point of view of these men, giving their names and their companies. Aside from furnishing on-the-spot military information, these personal reports make the book a deeply moving human document."
