About this Item
POLITICAL BEHAVIOR: A BOOK ON POLITICIANS AND THEIR WAYS, Frank R. Kent, hardcover, first edition per custom of publisher, 1928. BOOK CONDITION: good. The text block is in fine condition, with no tears, dogears, or marks. Pages are age-toned with deckle fore-edge. No bookplate or signature of a prior owner. Not a library book or remainder. The dark green cloth boards are in good condition (one bumped corner and bumped spine top and bottom, tiny spots at bottom edge of back). The clipped dust jacket (with the price still showing on the inner flap) is in poor condition (age-toned and spotted inside, edge chipping and tears, almost completely faded spine, stains on back). 7 ½ x 5 ½, 342 pages, 17 ounces XX [From the inner flap] The first absolutely frank revelation of what goes on behind the scenes in this modern democracy. Loaded with dynamite ? devastating to generally accepted ideas -- cynical, perhaps, but the truth -- not muckraking or campaign propaganda -- impartial, reasoned, dispassionate. There are only three or four men in America who could write this book. Of these Frank R. Kent is, perhaps, the only one who dares to write it. XX Frank Kent is one of the most brilliant, virile, and uncannily penetrating commentators on American politics today. He sees clearly, interprets honestly and courageously, and phrases his findings in such colorful fashion that his writing is as delightful as it is illuminating. In POLITICAL BEHAVIOR he explains the political scene vividly and so truly that no one who has been behind the scenes will question many of his conclusions (CLAUDE G. BOWERS) XX In exposing the actualities behind the imposing exteriors of politics there is no one quite like Frank Kent (JOHN S. MARTIN of TIME magazine). [From the back cover] Why does the party with the most money for current expenses almost always win? ARE moral issues in politics relatively unimportant? TO what does Alfred E. Smith largely owe his success? WHAT political campaign did two stockyard rats help to win? WHY is it suicide to bolt the party? HAS the women's vote changed anything in politics? WHAT American women have real political flair? IS the average American voter no longer revolted by corruption? WHAT'S a hot poker, and why shouldn't it be handled on the front porch? WHY couldn't Herbert Hoover possibly be nominated until 1928? IS it a pure accident when the American people decide an issue rightly? WHY are the little children in the tank towns no longer frightened by the money devils of Wall Street? CAN a candidate for office get by in any campaign no matter what the issues are if he skillfully handles the Bible, the Constitution and the Flag? IS there less corruption in public life than in private business? IS it necessary to fool the people first if you want to serve them? WHAT is the poison squad? WHAT would have happened in 1916 if Mr. Hughes had crossed a hotel lobby and spoken to Mr. Hiram Johnson? WHAT is a fat cat, and who is the fattest of them all? WHAT put Secretary Mellon and Boss Vare into double harness? WHAT is a whispering campaign, and how much can it do in politics? WHO are the greatest showmen in American politics?.
