George Chapman pioneered many of the most important genres in Elizabethan and Jacobean drama. Bussy D'Ambois, a bloodthirsty tale of an utterly uncompromising French adventurer, was England's first heroic tragedy. All Fooles precedes Ben Jonson in creating a comedy of intrigue which captures the atmosphere of a rapidly expanding London. The Widdowes Teares, a savage story of a man who pretends to be dead so he can woo his wife in the guise of her husband's murderer, created the vogue for tragi-comedies. This volume also contains a selection of Chapman's celebrated poetry
