First American edition, stated; translated from the French by Stuart Gilbert. Bound in black boards with blind grim reaper imprint on the front board and gold lettering and design (here faded) on the spine. The book is unmarked but heavily scuffed and worn, with a one-inch tear at the tail of the spine, several dings, and fraying at the corners and spine ends. The dust jacket is a new facsimile, an exact reproduction of the Knopf 1948 dust jacket except for the "Facsimile Dust Jackets L.L.C." box next to the original price of $3.00 net; Brodart protected.
