About this Item
1850. First edition. viii, 306pp. plus a 1 page list of some of the author's other works in volume 1 and viii and 282pp. in volume 2. There is a publisher's catalogue on the endpapers. Aubrey Thomas de Vere (1814-1902) was an Irish poet and friend of Wordsworth and Tennyson. He also travelled through Europe, and took a particular interest in Greece and Turkey. In these two volumes he tells of his tour, with some wonderful descriptions of the people he met and life in these countries in the first half of the 19th century. The books include chapters on the Ionian Islands, Athens, an expedition to Delphi, Patras, Constantinople, the Bosphorus, and an adventure in a harem. The books are bound in the original red cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spines, and have been rebacked (probably about 15 years ago) with the original spines overlaid onto new cloth. As a result the books are tight and secure. The boards have shelf wear and some staining and soiling, with the front board and spine of volume 2 being more heavily soiled. The corners are bumped with a little damage and loss to the cloth on the corner tips. The spine ends are lightly bumped and there is some wear to the titling on the spines. Small pieces are missing from the ends of the original overlaid spines. The contents are tight and the original endpapers have been retained. The pages are clean although a few pages have small notes or lines written in pencil on the fore margin. There is a name written on the front free endpaper in volume 1 and another name written on the reverse of the front free endpaper in both volumes. Seller Inventory # VITravel034
