First edition, dated 1899. Original red cloth illustrated in black 14 x 19cm. Printed by Gilbert and Rivington. vi + (2) + 104pp including 40 b/w illustrations (mainly photos) including frontispiece. Covers very good, gently bumped to extremities, slightly faded to spine, and dusted to the back. Interiors near fine, with gift inscription dated 1904 penciled faintly to the front blank. Mary Rebecca Stewart Bird (1859-1914), worked at the CMS mission in Persia as its first medical missionary during 1891-1914. She spent the first months learning Persian and Arabic, attempting to build relations with Persian women, initially with limited success, but increasingly popular as local women, forbidden from or unwilling to see a foreign male doctor, sought out her services. Although the purpose of the mission was evangelical, her account also covers manners and customs, and the photos show intimate domestic scenes, street scenes, types, settlements and landscapes.
