First edition of this anonymously published collection of radical documents, tracts, and writings in French and English, compiled and edited from numerous sources by the Dutch feminist and pamphleteer Maria Aletta Hulshoff (1781-1846), and intended as a manual for pacifists. It includes the first American printing of the French Constitution of 1793. Hulshoff, having completed a two-year sentence in her own country for her political publications and wanted for her pamphlet against the Napoleonic conscription, chose to live in voluntary exile in New York from 1811 to 1820, where she published this work. She notes in the preface that she is only the publisher of these texts and that this compilation "[is neither (her) property, nor that of anyone else]", and encourages others to reprint it from the "small number of copies printed in this favoured Land, where sound reasonings and unperverted accounts of facts can be freely published". Included are extracts from the works of Thomas Paine, Cato, Rousseau, Joseph Fawcette (his poem "Civilized War"), anti-war sermons, among others. Octavo. 1 p. publisher's advertisements at end. Original drab boards, front board lettered in black, partly unopened, untrimmed. Extremities a little worn, a couple of cracks along spine but firm, two small stains to front board, faint toning to contents, else internally clean and fresh; a very good copy.
