1879 1st edition. 2 of 2 volumes. Vol 1 331pp, vol 2 354pp. Good/None. Green decorative cloth boards, both volumes with a little rubbing/bumping to edges/spine, very minor scuffing/wear. Contents of both volumes generally clean and tight but for minor soiling/browning. B&W illustrations throughout by the likes of Bertall, Cham, Pelcoq, Grevin, Gill, Marie, Morin, Deroy, Lalanne, Benoist, Lafosse, Mars, etc. Sala was a journalist writing for the Daily Telegraph in London. He knew Paris well having been educated there, and he was present during the February Revolution of 1848, the coup d'etat of 1851 and just prior to the Siege of 1870, the culmination of the Franco-Prussian War. He returned to Paris in 1878 to cover the Exposition Universalle. He found the city much recovered from the hardships of the previous 30 years. These volumes are a celebration of the city.
