Published in London in 12854, this is the First Edition of this scarce collection of seven pamphlets running to 301 pages, by Vice Admiral William Bowles on the British Royal Navy, with a further two pamphlets bound in at rear. CONTENTS. Remarks on the Conduct of the Naval Administration of Great Britain since 1815. 1830. Short Remarks on the present State of the Navy. 1846 . Suggestions for the more speedy Equipment and better manning Her Majesty's Navy. 1840 . Suggestions for the speedy and secure Conveyance of our Reinforcements to Canada. 1826 . . Thoughts on the National Defences. 1848 . . An Essay on Naval Operations. 1849. Remarks on the Bill presented to Parliament, and read a first time, for Improving the Condition of Masters, Mates and Seamen, in the Merchant Service. 1849 . . A Militia our only Real Naval Reserve 1860. A Recommendation for Abolishing the Rank of Commander in the Royal Navy, 1858. THE BOOK. The book is bound in the original embossed patterned blue cloth, 9 inches tall approx., the main contents run to 301 pages, with a further two pamphlets bound in at the rear. CONDITION. The covers have noticeable wear with splits to cloth along spine edges, a noticeable bump to upper front corner that has cracked the board within, ( see pictures) internally noticeable grubby handling marks on an off throughout, a few other marks, some page edges have been roughly opened leaving some ragged uneven page edges, this does not affect the text, one page has a more noticeable tear (pictured) else in acceptable condition. A well used but acceptable example of this scarce book. ADMIRAL OF THE FLEEET SIR WILLIAM BOWLES Admiral of the Fleet Sir William Bowles, KCB (25 May 1780 ? 2 July 1869) was a senior Royal Navy officer and Conservative Party politician. After serving as a junior officer in the French Revolutionary Wars, he became commanding officer of the sloop HMS Zebra and took part in the bombardment of Copenhagen in September 1807 during the Napoleonic Wars. As commanding officer of the fifth-rate HMS Medusa, he took part in operations off the north coast of Spain and led a naval brigade in a raid on Santoņa. Bowles went on to be Commander-in-Chief, South America Station before becoming Third Naval Lord in the Second Peel ministry as well as Member of Parliament (MP) for Launceston in Cornwall. He published a number of papers arguing for innovations in naval warfare and naval administration before becoming Commander-in-Chief, Portsmouth. Seller Inventory # 003713
