Offered is "The New 'Know Nothings': American History Repeats Itself to the Peril of Everyman," the text of a sermon given on February 11, 1962 by the Rev. Stephen H. Fritchman at the First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles, and later on February 25, 1962 at the First Unitarian Church of Berkeley, and published in mimeographed print form as the March 1962 Sermon of the Month by the First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles. A stapled pamphlet measuring 7" by 8-1/2" and containing 16 pages including front and rear covers. A few brief excerpts from the Sermon, reading in short part: "On December 31st Rev. Brooks Walker, the Unitarian leader in Canoga Park, spoke from the pulpit of the First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles on the subject of the radical right. On February 1st, as you know, his home was bombed as he spoke on the same subject to a forum in Hollywood, as was that of another speaker, Rev. John Simmons of the Lutheran Church. The bombing of Mr. Walker's home has haunted me in these recent days" - "The John Birch Society, the [Fred] Schwarz Crusaders, the Billy [James] Hargis Blood Atonement Christians, scores of thousands of them, when you look twice at their programs are saying: End the last thirty-two years of our progress to care for our own people - the aged, the sick, the unemployed, the orphaned, the widowed. On wonders if these Christians ever read the Ten Commandments or the Sermon on the Mount. What, in fact, we are asked to do is to let millions of people in a great industrial society today die like vermin in the streets." The REVEREND STEPHEN H. [HOLE] FRITCHMAN (1902-1981), author, liberal humanist, and social and antiwar activist, was the minister of the progressive First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles, California, from 1948 to 1969.
