Hard to find.The â  Nest Leader's Manualâ  likened by Prof. Nae lonescu â  as regards its educational value â  to the â  Spiritual Exercisesâ  of St. Ignatius Loyola, constitutes on the organizatorial level the basic work of the Legionary Movement, as the political expression of this movement, also known under the name "The Iron Guardâ  or that of the party, "AU For the Fatherland." The conception of â  The Manualâ  , as the reading of its contents reveals, was that of Corneliu Z. Codreanu, "the Captain," taking into account specific Romanian realities. So that the foreign reader to whom this translation is addressed may unequivocally encompass the meaning of this guide, a presentation of the Movement's historical, political and ethical fundamentals is essential. I. Affinities with and Differences from the Other Nationalist Movements. The origin of the Legionary Movement in Romania is to be found in the spiritual, political and social crisis which for a long time had agitated modern society, with specific manifestations in the south-east European countries having an agricultural structure. FROM THE INTRO:However, as a phenomenon, it began to take shape immediately following World War I, being a reaction of the nationai organism against Russian Nihilism which found its most violent expression in the Bolshevik Revolution in the Fall of 1917. It was then, in the first place, a reflex action of conservation, a spasm of the national instinct in a society led by a degenerate elite weakened in faith, eaten by corruption, skepacal, frivolous, distorted in concepts and with the resources of its soul relaxed, which made it incapable of awakenmg and mobilizing the energies needed to confront the Euro-Asiatic peril. Under this aspect, the correlation with the other revolutionary movements tending toward national strength and the reinforcement of state power, such as Italian Fascism and German Nationalismâ ¦.
