About this Item
xv, [3], 256pp. With a half-title. Uncut in original publisher's drab paper boards, printed paper lettering-piece to spine. Rubbed, joints starting, loss to spine, lettering-piece chipped, corners bumped. Very occasional light spotting. The first edition, in original unsophisticated state, of Bernard Barton's (1784-1849) fifth volume of poetry. The titular poem, at 118 Spenserian stanzas, is by far Barton's longest. Highly influenced by the author's Quakerism, the poem is more a commentary on Christian pacifism than it is a reflection of the character of the French Emperor - to the extent that the Literary Speculum (June, 1822), in their rather dismissive review, suggested it could well have been entitled 'Julius Caesar', 'Alexander', or 'Tamerlane'. Jackson p.483. Size: 8vo. Seller Inventory # AQ29256
