About this Item
Privately Bound Hardback book. A sammelband volume comprising of eight works by John W Campbell jr, (one novella and seven short stories), Taken from various issues of Amazing Stories and Thrilling Wonder Stories between 1935 and 1938. 1) The serial novella "Conquest of the Planets" published in three parts in Amazing Stories January - March 1935. The first part of which is mis-titled titled "Contest for the Planets" and sub-titled "Mother World". 2) "Uncertainty" published in two parts in Amazing Stories October and December 1936. 3) Planet of Eternal Night published in Thrilling Wonder Stories in October 1939. 4) The Penton and Blake stories comprising of five titles all published in Thrilling Wonder Stories: The "Brain Stealers of Mars" December 1936; "The Double Minds" August 1937; "The Immortality Seekers" October 1937; "The Tenth World" December 1937; "The Brain Pirates" October 1938. The parts for each of the titles have been collated in this private binding, the illustrated pages have artwork by Leo Morey, and Wesso. The volume has brown paper over boards, which are gently bumped and rubbed to corners, with some light marking. The cloth spine is in good very good condition, bumped at ends with some minor rubbing. The leather spine label is firmly a fixed and tidy, with gilt titles that are not rubbed - although note "Mother" has been stamped a little wonky. The front hinge is just starting, but holds firmly. The title contents page is hand typed and has some feint pencil notation against the titles. The text block edges have paper quality toning, as can only be expected, as these sections did come from the original pulp magazines. The pages are toned, and some have small chips to the edges. There is no indication of the binder, it is almost certainly amateur, but is competently done, except for the spine label gilt stamping. I feel that this was probably bound in the UK some time in the late 1940s, for obvious reasons it is difficult to be precise. A one off sammelband volume, that is very solid condition, and simply interesting due to it's existence. A book for the historical SF collector that has everything else. Seller Inventory # 007193
