Signed by the editor on the title page with an inscription to the previous owner. Red cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine. Spine is somewhat cocked; some rubbing to edges; mild soiling. Front gutter is cracked, but binding is still fairly tight. Interior is clean.Text block has red top stain. Includes 12 black and white plates and a two-page map. This book presents a translated and edited version of the journal of Philippe Regis de Trobriand, a French aristocrat who emigrated to America, fought for the Union Army in the Civil War, and then served as commander of Fort Stevenson in the Dakota Territory from 1867 to 1870.
