A somewhat poor copy of the first British hard cover edition, lacking dust-jackets, perhaps as issued. The text of each volume is wholly unmarked. The spine of each volume is missing, revealing the webbing etc. below, and resulting in a slight wobble to the front board of Volume I. Paste-down to each front board printed: Escrick Park, though there are no ex-library identifiers. Tissue guards to frontispiece portraits present in each volume. Some scattered pages have damp-staining to the edges, as from ambient moisture; no mustiness to the volumes. A good working/reading set of the first British edition. Seven pages of adverts of Edward Moxon offerings as front matter to Volume I only.
