In 1880, George Gebbie suggested to Mark Twain that he publish an anthology of humorous works. The idea eventually worked out into a project financed by Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) to produce an anthology of American humor with himself as editor and Howells and Clark assisting. Clemens actually did the least work on the project, but he remained in control the whole time and had the final say in everything. FULL TAN LEATHER with gilt lettering on red and black rectangles on spine. Not often found in full leather. B&W frontispiece. Marbled end papers and page edges. Includes facsimile of Mark Twain's "Compiler's Apology." Condition: Very Good-, First Edition, First Printing with matching dates of 1888 on the title and copyright page with no later printings noted, and the short story "Warm Hair" erroneously credited to Mark Twain on page 8. Wear to four corners and bottom edges of covers. Rear cover hinge cracked(major flaw-see photo) as well as one inch of front cover hinge. Some soiling and staining to covers. Bookseller stamp on bep.
